Q1: What is the advantage of outsourcing the preparation of the IHM booklet instead of having it prepared by the shipyard?
A1: Shipyard personnel are required to re-contact suppliers for all equipment installed on board in order to collect IHM declarations.
Explaining the forms correctly, interpreting the regulations, and gaining practical expertise in this area require significant time and experience.
Engaging specialized support reduces the workload of your personnel, prevents time loss, and allows your resources to be allocated more efficiently.
Q2: How does the process work between the shipyard and the IHM service provider during IHM booklet preparation?
A2: The vessel’s technical specification is obtained from the shipyard, an equipment inventory list is prepared, and it is forwarded to the shipyard for completion of the relevant contact information.
Based on the information received, the preparation of all documentation, compilation of the booklet, obtaining class approvals, and responding to class remarks are managed by our team.
Q3: Is the IHM booklet mandatory?
A3: Under the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (SR/CONF/45), preparation of IHM is mandatory for all commercial vessels of 500 GT and above.
Q4: Is sampling mandatory for newbuilding projects?
A4: No, sampling is not mandatory. However, class surveyors may request sampling based on their own assessment.
In addition, some flag administrations may require sampling in addition to declarations.
Q5: How long does it take to prepare an IHM booklet?
A5: If equipment procurement has been completed, the process is typically finalized within 3–5 months.
